Catastrophe Management

The catastrophe management team at Canopius is comprised of subject matter experts with overall responsibility for the management of catastrophe risk across the Group. We recruit from a variety of disciplines (including natural hazards, economics and mathematics) to provide a multi-disciplinary team of technical specialists who support all areas of catastrophe exposed underwriting.

Initially formed in 2007, the catastrophe management function has worked on developing a best-in-class understanding of vendor models and worldwide catastrophe science. We devise and implement a holistic view of risk encompassing natural and man-made perils and ensure this is applied throughout the business, including underwriting, outward reinsurance, pricing and capital modelling. By challenging market-wide perspectives of risk we can generate a competitive advantage over our peer group.

We work collaboratively with academia and third parties to further develop our expertise into emerging areas of risk and of modelled and non-modelled perils. Via our close working relationship with the catastrophe analytics team in our parent company Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc., we can leverage a wider resource focused on developing bespoke catastrophe risks models and academic research. This allows us to proactively deploy a pooled resource to meet the business needs of Canopius.
