Cyber War Insurance
Cyber conflict is no longer limited to governments or critical national infrastructure, and standard cyber policies commonly exclude losses from cyber war. This leaves organisations exposed to Cyber War insurance gaps when they need it most.
As geopolitical tensions play out through digital channels, even businesses far from physical conflict can face attacks that disrupt operations, damage systems and erode financial resilience.
Canopius Cyber War insurance has been developed to address this gap, providing greater certainty in an increasingly unpredictable threat environment.
What is Cyber War insurance?
Cyber War insurance is a type of cyber cover that responds to losses from state-sponsored or state-aligned cyber-attacks that are part of a physical war or cause widespread operational disruption across a country. These are events that are typically excluded from standard cyber insurance policies.
It provides a defined response to scenarios that would otherwise leave you with no recourse. Unlike standard cyber cover, Cyber War insurance recognises that geopolitical conflict means businesses can suffer significant losses even if there is no formal declaration of war.
What we do
Canopius Cyber War cover is designed to respond to losses arising from cyber war events that would otherwise fall outside the scope of conventional cyber insurance cover.Extending your existing cyber cover
The insurance mirrors the structure and intent of our standard cyber policy but extends protection to include cyber attacks linked to state-sponsored or state-aligned activity that are part of a physical war or cause widespread operational disruption across a country.
This includes attacks carried out as part of a physical conflict, as well as state-sponsored cyber activity that causes widespread operational disruption, even where a formally declared war is not in place.
Bringing clarity to an uncertain landscape
By clearly defining a response to these scenarios, the cover helps bring clarity and intent to an area that has historically lacked certainty.
- Destructive or disruptive cyber activity linked to geopolitical conflict
- State-sponsored cyber attacks that materially impact a country’s operations, regardless of whether a physical war is underway
- First-party and third-party losses consistent with the underlying Canopius cyber insurance policy
Cyber War insurance:
- Is available only in conjunction with a traditional Canopius cyber insurance policy
- Requires Canopius to be the lead primary cyber insurer
- Is underwritten on an individual risk basis
This ensures full alignment between the underlying cyber cover and the cyber war protection, and allows our underwriters to assess exposure holistically.

- $10m (USD) per risk, subject to underwriting appetite and programme structure
Cyber War Insurance may be appropriate for organisations that:
